How do you wash a hamster?

Hamsters are very clean rodents. Like cats, they spend a lot of time grooming and don’t generally require baths. In fact, soapy water is harmful to hamsters as it dilutes the protective oil that coats their fur. That said, there may be times when you hamster gets downright dirty and needs some help washing. In this article, Chico shares some safe and effective methods for giving your hamster a top-notch wash.

If your hamster has long hair, start by brushing it. Then, choose one of the four following washing methods:

1. Dry shampoo

There are some dry shampoos made specially for rodents. To apply the shampoo, place your hamster on a towel and spread the product over its fur with a soft brush. Brushing in all directions will help to remove dirt. Just be gentle so that you don’t cause your pet stress. You also have to be careful not to get the shampoo in its eyes, mouth, nose or ears. If you apply the shampoo properly, it may even feel like a relaxing massage to your hamster.

2. Sand bath

For a hamster, a sand bath is like a jacuzzi. Choose a sand that’s sterilized and safe for rodents and watch your little ball of fur roll around in delight. You’ll also see the dirt in its fur disappear, as though by magic.

3. Wet wipes

There are wet wipes on the market designed specifically for rodents. They’re unscented and able to remove dirt, dander and odours without damaging your pet’s skin or fur. Simply pass them gently over your hamster to refresh and clean it. In addition, most of the products can be used to clean your pet’s ears, paws and hindquarters.

4. Bath in warm water

This should be used only as a last resort, when the other solutions have failed. Add a rodent-friendly cleaner to a bowl of lukewarm water and immerse your hamster without getting its head wet. As this will be uncomfortable for your pet, don’t leave it in the water for long. After you’ve washed and rinsed your hamster, wrap it in a towel to keep it warm.
